Day 2: From Ferrara to Pomposa/Volano (Half Board) – 77-85 km

In the morning, enjoy a self-guided visit of the medieval and Renaissance city of Ferrara: the Castle, the Cathedral, Via delle Volte, the city walls, Marfisa d’Este Palace, Palazzo dei Diamanti, the Jewish Quarter with its museum and cemetery, the Basilica of San Giorgio Fuori le Mura (the oldest church in the city). From the Basilica, the cycling route begins, leading to Pomposa and Volano. The itinerary winds through the countryside to Voghenza, where you can visit the necropolis and the Church of San Leo. Continue towards the Delizia of Belriguardo and Verginese. You will admire Tresigallo, known as the “Metaphysical City,” and Gherardi, now famous for its murals.Cycling through cultivated fields, the route follows the ancient course of the Po di Volano River to Codigoro. Here, a stop at the Bishop’s Palace is recommended before continuing along the cycle path to the Benedictine Abbey of Pomposa, with its impressive bell tower and the spiritual charm of the Romanesque church, alongside other buildings from various periods.Few people know that it was the monk Guido d’Arezzo, during his stay at Pomposa, who first codified the modern structure of musical notes.

Day 4: Taglio di Po - Comacchio (B&B) – 70 km

After breakfast, depart for Comacchio. Following the left bank of the Po River, you will reach Ariano nel Polesine. Cross the bridge over the Po to arrive at Ariano Ferrarese. Continue for a stretch on the provincial road and then along the right bank of the Po until you reach Mesola, where you can admire the castle, the summer residence of the Este Dukes. The route continues to Torre Abate and the Mesola Woods, where you can take a short break for a snack. From there, head towards Volano and the Canneviè Oasis (FAI Oasis). Continue to Lido di Volano, cycling through the natural reserve of the Volano Pine Forest, and then on to Lido delle Nazioni. About halfway, you can admire the wooden sculptures created by Mr. Menegatti. From Lido delle Nazioni, cycle along the seafront and then follow the cycle path to Porto Garibaldi, a port renowned for bluefish fishing. Take the ferry for pedestrians and bicycles to Lido degli Estensi, and proceed towards the Valleys of Comacchio.Don’t miss a stop to enjoy the panoramic view from the small tower on the Logonovo Canal. Along the way, surrounded by the waters of Valle Fattibello and the Saline, you’ll witness the splendid sight of numerous flamingos and other birds. Finally, arrive at the lagoon city of Comacchio. Dinner is at your leisure, and overnight accommodation will be in a hotel or farmhouse.

Day 5:Comacchio-Argenta. (M.P) km. 63,00/72,00

In the morning, visit the historic center of Comacchio, with its unique architectural project, the Trepponti, a 17th-century five-arched bridge that recalls the city’s lagoon past. Visit the Cathedral of San Cassiano, the Loggiato dei Cappuccini, which leads to the Church of Santa Maria in Aula Regia, and the Museum of the Marinato Manufacturing, the old factory of the famous marinated eel. After the visit, continue towards Argenta, following the Comacchio Valleys and taking the road along the Argine Agosta. You will pass through the reclaimed Mezzano Valleys and connect to the Reno River Cycle Path, or alternatively, reach Argenta directly by following the quiet roads of the Mezzano Valley.

Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel or farmhouse.

Day 6: Argenta - Ferrara (B&B) – 51 km

Near Argenta, a town devastated by the Allies during World War II, a visit to the exterior of the ancient Pieve di San Giorgio and the surrounding Valleys is a must. These freshwater wetlands were created for reclamation purposes, and the adjacent floodplain forest offers opportunities for birdwatching. You can also visit two interesting museums: the Historical and Naturalistic Museum of the Argenta Valleys and the Reclamation Museum.Cycling along part of the cycle path and part of the road that runs alongside the Po di Primaro, you will reach Ferrara by 6:00 PM.
