Day 2: From Ferrara to Pomposa/Volano (Half Board) – 77-85 km
In the morning, enjoy a self-guided visit of the medieval and Renaissance city of Ferrara: the Castle, the Cathedral, Via delle Volte, the city walls, Marfisa d’Este Palace, Palazzo dei Diamanti, the Jewish Quarter with its museum and cemetery, the Basilica of San Giorgio Fuori le Mura (the oldest church in the city). From the Basilica, the cycling route begins, leading to Pomposa and Volano. The itinerary winds through the countryside to Voghenza, where you can visit the necropolis and the Church of San Leo. Continue towards the Delizia of Belriguardo and Verginese. You will admire Tresigallo, known as the “Metaphysical City,” and Gherardi, now famous for its murals.Cycling through cultivated fields, the route follows the ancient course of the Po di Volano River to Codigoro. Here, a stop at the Bishop’s Palace is recommended before continuing along the cycle path to the Benedictine Abbey of Pomposa, with its impressive bell tower and the spiritual charm of the Romanesque church, alongside other buildings from various periods.Few people know that it was the monk Guido d’Arezzo, during his stay at Pomposa, who first codified the modern structure of musical notes.
